Why I Decided to Give up Fishing

Mountain Weekly News ~

Let me start this article off with a couple tidbits. A. I was never really that into fishing to begin with and B. this article was written after being asked almost daily here in the Tetons if I fish, and the answer is NO.

Find out why below or just find another website to read if my If my words don’t glow with the gold of your sunshine..

Fly Fishing is Inhumane

Fly fishing is in fact very inhumane and this comes from someone that likes to hunt and kill animals for food. What other “sport” involves basically killing an animal and then releasing it back to the wild, without even eating the damn fish? Sure there might be people that claim that catch and release fishing is not harmful to the fish however when a sharp hook goes into a fish’s mouth or possibly gills and then the fish is “fighting” to get away well that to me does not look fun to anyone but the dude with a pole in hand.

Not all fishing is bad

Keep in mind I have friends that actually fish for a living, in the ocean. The main difference is they actually kill the fish they catch and those fish end up as food for you and I to eat. This is a natural part of the food chain, one predator eating another. Simple as that. I doubt if one of my friends hooked a big ahi or marlin they would ever consider letting it go. Is this not how the story of the “fish that got away” came to be? It surely wasn’t from someone pulling the hook out of the fishes mouth and wishing it farewell.

The irony here is we have actually tested fly fishing gear through the Mountain Weekly News… Something that we may or may not do again in the future. Sure the gear is nice and some extra revenue on sales but at what cost.

Honestly, nobody cares about the picture you post to Facebook or Instagram holding a fish, (you know who you are) why claim it? Isn’t fly fishing supposed to be a soulful pursuit of the outdoors? Leave you iPhone at home the next time you are going for a float on the river. Which leads us to another point.

Bet you though you were cool in all your fishing gear bros..

Fly Fishing is for the wealthy

Yeah I just went there, maybe I’m wrong but most of the “bros” I know that fly fish have a few things in common. #1 is they usually own a drift boat, #2 is they usually drive big truck and #3 they always are wearing lots of expensive fishing gear.

Is fly-fishing for poor people? Sure anyone can go out and fish, however most poor people would prefer to actually eat dinner than waist there free time sitting on the river or the bank to see how big of a cuttie or brown they can hook on the line, fight it back boat and then bit it goodnight, goodnight…

Surely this article will get hate mail, bring it. I speak from the heart. Surely this article will offend some of the brands that have supported us over the years, and that’s ok too.

I can not think of any other sport. any other humane activity that involves corning an animal so to speak, scaring the living hell out of said animal and then letting it go back to the wild.

What do you think the fish would say?
